Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate) is indicated for the short-term treatment of infections caused by bacteria susceptible to the action of amoxicillin/clavulanate for the following sites:

  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing isolates of Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis.
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media in adults.

Do's

  • Carefully measure the dose of this medication using a special measuring device/spoon. The dosage of Augmentin is based on age, weight, medical condition, and response to treatment.
  • The dosage may vary depending on the specific product, and the medication is usually taken every 8 or 12 hours for the best effect.
  • Shake the bottle well before each dose to ensure proper dispersion of the medication.
  • Take this medication with a meal or snack as directed by your healthcare provider to reduce the possibility of gastrointestinal upset.
  • Take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help remember, take this medication at the same time(s) every day.
  • Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days.

Don'ts

  • Using a household spoon may not provide the correct dose.
  • Augmentin treats only bacterial infections and will not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu. 
  • Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.

However, inform your healthcare provider right away if any serious side effects occur, such as signs of liver disease, unusual tiredness, or any other concerning symptoms. Augmentin should not be used by individuals with severe kidney disease, a history of liver problems or jaundice while taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, or those allergic to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic.

Patients with a history of mononucleosis should avoid taking this antibiotic, as it can increase the risk of severe skin rashes.

Augmentin can interact with various drugs, including doxycycline, allopurinol, methotrexate, warfarin, and oral contraceptives. Consult a healthcare provider before taking any drug, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment.

The medication should be taken with caution in individuals with liver diseases, as it can worsen liver damage in such patients.
