Hiprex (Methenamine) is a medication indicated to prevent or manage recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by certain bacterial strains. It cannot treat an active UTI. You'll need antibiotics to clear an existing infection.
Hiprex targets and stops the growth of bacteria specifically within the urinary tract. It contains an ingredient that increases the acidity of your urine. This acidic environment is needed for methenamine to transform into formaldehyde, which has antibacterial properties.
Methenamine works exclusively against bacterial UTIs. It won't help with other bacterial infections in the body or viral infections like colds or the flu. Unnecessary or excessive use of Hiprex (or any antibacterial drug) can make it less effective over time.

Methenamine dosage is determined by several factors including the brand, your medical condition, age, and weight. Methenamine works best in acidic urine. Your healthcare provider might check your urine pH and recommend ways to increase acidity, like taking vitamin C, limiting certain foods (milk products, most fruits), or adjusting medications.
