Vantin (Cefpodoxime)

Do’s

• Take Vantin by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, typically every 12 hours.
• If using the tablet form, take it with food to aid in drug absorption.
• If using the suspension form, take it with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each dose.
• The dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to therapy. For children, the dose is also based on weight
• Medications that reduce or block stomach acid (such as proton pump inhibitors/PPIs, H2 blockers, and antacids) may lessen the absorption of cefpodoxime, potentially impacting its effectiveness. Consult your healthcare provider on how to safely use PPIs and H2 blockers with Vantin. If taking antacids, take them at least 2 hours before or after this medication.
• To maximize effectiveness, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced intervals, ideally at the same time(s) every day.
• Complete the full prescribed amount of medication, even if symptoms improve before the course is finished. Prematurely stopping the medication may lead to a return of the infection.
• If your condition persists or worsens, inform your healthcare provider promptly.

Common Side Effects:

• Diarrhea
• Nausea and vomiting
• Headache
• Vaginal itching or discharge
• Diaper rash in infants using this medicine

Additionally, if any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your healthcare provider promptly.

In patients with transient or persistent reduction in urinary output due to renal insufficiency, the total daily dose of Vantin should be reduced to avoid high and prolonged serum antibiotic concentrations. Caution should be exercised when administering Vantin to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics.

Prolonged use of Vantin may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Repeated evaluation of the patient's condition is essential, and appropriate measures should be taken if superinfection occurs during therapy.

Prescribing Vantin in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

Vantin treats only bacterial infections and will not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections

The safety and efficacy of Vantin have not been established for individuals under 2 months of age. Consult a healthcare provider before taking Vantin and any drug, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment.
