How should I take Nizoral/Ketoconazole ?

Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger doses than prescribed by your doctor. Do not take this medication longer than recommended by your doctor. Take this medication as directed by your doctor. Nizoral (ketoconazole) is taken with food. When your symptoms improve, continue taking Nizoral (ketoconazole) for the entire time it is prescribed to you because your infection may not have been treated completely as soon as you notice your symptoms improved. Nizoral (ketoconazole) does not treat viral infections such as a common cold or flu. Patients taking Nizoral (ketoconazole) will need to have regular liver function and blood tests to ensure the medication is not causing harmful effects to you. It is important not to miss any doctor appointments.

When should Nizoral /Ketoconazole not be taken?

Do not use Nizoral (ketoconazole) if you are allergic to Ketoconazole or are also taking triazolam (Halcion).

What precautions should I follow when taking Nizoral /Ketoconazole ?

Before taking Nizoral (ketoconazole), inform your doctors if you have the following: if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding; if you have decreased stomach acid (achlorhydria); liver disease; kidney disease; a heart rhythm disorder; or a personal or family history of "Long QT syndrome".

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Nizoral /Ketoconazole ?

When taking Nizoral (ketoconazole), avoid drinking alcohol because it can cause unpleasant side effects. In addition, wait for at least 2 hours before you take any antacids or stomach acid reducers such as Tagamet, Pepcid, Axid, Zantac, and others).

When should Nizoral /Ketoconazole not be taken?

Most severe: Fainting, fast or pounding heartbeat, or dizziness; easy bleeding or bruising, unusual weakness; tingly or numbness feeling; severe confusion, depression, or thoughts of hurting yourself; stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea, low fever, weakness, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or dark urine.

Common: Skin rash or mild itching; vomiting, mild nausea, or stomach pain; dizziness, impotence or loss of interest in sex; headache; or breast swelling.
