Urispas, also known by its generic name flavoxate, is indicated for the symptomatic relief of various urinary tract symptoms. These symptoms may include:

  • Dysuria: Painful or difficult urination
  • Urgency: The sudden and compelling need to urinate
  • Nocturia: Excessive urination at night
  • Suprapubic pain: Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Frequency: Frequent urination
  • Incontinence: Urine leakage

These symptoms may occur in conditions such as cystitis, prostatitis, urethritis, urethrocystitis, and urethrotrigonitis. Urispas is not indicated for the definitive treatment of these conditions, but rather for the relief of associated symptoms. It is also not intended for the treatment of urinary tract infections, as these must be treated with antibiotics.

Do’s

  • Take Urispas by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 3 to 4 times a day.  Take it with food if stomach upset occurs.
  • The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Your healthcare provider may lower your dose after your symptoms have improved. The length of treatment depends on the cause of the problem.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if your condition lasts or gets worse.

Don’ts

  • Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often without your healthcare provider's approval. Your condition will not improve any faster, and the risk of side effects may be increased.

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest
  • Confusion
  • Nervousness

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. If you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

You should not use Urispas if you are allergic to it, or if you have a blockage in your digestive tract, stomach or intestinal bleeding, bladder obstruction, or if you are unable to urinate.

Urispas should preferably be avoided during pregnancy as there is limited information available about its safety in pregnant women. Always consult a healthcare provider before starting any medicine during pregnancy. It is also unknown if flavoxate passes into human breastmilk, hence, you should not use the Urispas while breastfeeding.

Urispas might make you feel sleepy and blur your vision, so you should avoid driving until you feel well and your vision is clear. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Urispas, as alcohol intake, along with Urispas, may cause increased drowsiness.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have urinary obstruction, gastrointestinal obstruction, muscle weakness, gastrointestinal bleeding, or glaucoma. Urispas should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease, and there is limited information available on its use in patients with liver disease.
