Bentyl (dicyclomine hydrochloride) is indicated for the treatment of patients with functional bowel/irritable bowel syndrome. It is an antispasmodic and anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) agent used to treat intestinal spasms and cramping in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional bowel disorders.

Do's

  • Take Bentyl as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Start the medication at a low dose, as directed by your healthcare provider, and gradually increase it to reduce the risk of side effects.
  • Take Bentyl by mouth with or without food, usually 4 times a day.
  • Measure the dose carefully while using a special measuring device/spoon if using the liquid form.
  • Mix the dose of liquid with an equal amount of water before taking it.
  • Consult your healthcare provider if your condition lasts or worsens.
  • Adhere to your healthcare provider's instructions regarding dosage and administration.
  • Make any changes to your medication regimen under the guidance of a healthcare provider for the best possible outcome and to minimize adverse effects.

Don’ts

  • Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
  • Don't take Bentyl at the same time as antacids, as they can lower its absorption. If taking an antacid, take it after meals and Bentyl before meals.
  • Don't increase your dose or take Bentyl more often without your healthcare provider's approval. This won't improve your condition faster and may increase the risk of serious side effects.

The dosage of Bentyl is typically determined by your healthcare provider based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment.

Bentyl is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old and should never be given to a child younger than 6 months old.

Bentyl can interact with other drugs with similar anticholinergic effects. Inform your healthcare provider about all your current medicines before starting Bentyl. Additionally, certain drugs can either lower or increase the concentration of Bentyl in the blood. Avoid alcohol while taking Bentyl, as it can increase the drug's sedative effects.
