Pertzye is indicated for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) due to cystic fibrosis or other conditions. EPI is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes, leading to difficulties in digesting and absorbing nutrients from food. Pertzye contains a combination of digestive enzymes that help break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the digestive system, allowing for better nutrient absorption.

Do’s

  • The dosage of Pertzye is determined by your medical condition, diet, weight, and response to treatment. Take this medication as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Pertzye should be taken by mouth with meals and snacks as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Swallow the capsule whole. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, you may open it and mix the contents in a small amount of liquid or soft food that does not require chewing, such as room-temperature applesauce. Consult your healthcare provider for specific instructions on what foods or liquids to avoid when mixing.
  • After swallowing the mixture, be sure to drink a glass of water or juice to ensure that all the medication is swallowed.
  • Drink plenty of fluids while taking Pertzye unless otherwise instructed by your healthcare provider.
  • If your healthcare provider has recommended a special diet, follow it closely in order to get the most benefit from Pertzye.
  • Take Pertzye regularly with every meal or snack to maximize its effectiveness.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it worsens while taking Pertzye.

Don’ts

  • Do not exceed the recommended dose. Taking more capsules than prescribed will not improve your condition faster and may increase the risk of side effects.
  • Do not crush or chew the capsules or keep them in your mouth, as this can irritate the mouth and affect the medication's effectiveness.
  • Do not mix the capsule’s contents with alkaline food or liquid (such as milk, ice cream, or tea).
  • Do not save the medication mixture for later use.
  • Do not change brands or dosage forms of pancrelipase (the active ingredient in Pertzye) without consulting your healthcare provider. Stick with the product prescribed to you, as different products may contain different amounts of digestive enzymes.

Pertzye may increase the risk of a rare bowel disorder called fibrosing colonopathy. This condition is serious and may require surgery. To reduce the risk, follow the dosing instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

Doses greater than the recommended amount have been associated with colonic strictures, indicative of fibrosing colonopathy, in children with cystic fibrosis. Patients currently receiving higher doses should be examined, and the dosage should be adjusted as necessary.
