About Pertzye (Lipase/Protease/Amylase)

  • Pertzye is a prescription medication used to treat people who have difficulty digesting food because their pancreas does not produce enough enzymes owing to cystic fibrosis or other diseases.
  • Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that runs in families. It is caused by a faulty gene that causes the body to create abnormally thick and sticky mucus. This mucus accumulates in the lungs’ and pancreas’ breathing channels.
  • Pertzye pills contain a blend of digestive enzymes derived from the pig pancreas, including lipases, proteases, and amylases.
  • Lipases, proteases, and amylases are all enzymes that play a role in the digestion of food. Lipases break down fats, proteases break down proteins, and amylases break down carbohydrates.
  • Pertzye is a medication that contains all three of these enzymes. It is used to treat digestive disorders such as pancreatitis and some other diseases.
  • Pertzye is taken by mouth with or without food. It is available in capsules or as a powder that can be mixed with water or other liquids.
  • Pertzye is safe and effective in children when used as directed by your doctor.

Uses of Pertzye (Lipase/Protease/Amylase)

  • The drug works by breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into their simplest form, allowing for easier absorption by the body.
  • Pertzye is most commonly used to treat Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and pancreatitis. The medication can also be used to treat indigestion, heartburn, and diarrhea.
  • Pertzye is taken orally or through a gastrostomy tube. The lowest indicated dose should be started and gradually increased. The dosage of Pertzye should be tailored to the patient’s clinical symptoms, degree of steatorrhea, and dietary fat content.

Patients may be dosed using either a fat ingestion-based or an actual body weight-based strategy.

  • Infants (up to 12 months)Infants can get 4,000 lipase units (one capsule) for every 120 ml of formula or breast milk. Pertyze capsule contents should not be mixed directly into formula or breast milk.
  • Children between the ages of 12 months and 4 yearsFor children under the age of four, enzyme dosing should begin with 1,000 lipase units/kg of body weight per meal and progress to a maximum of 2,500 lipase units/kg of body weight per meal (or less than or equal to 10,000 lipase units/kg of body weight per day), or less than 4,000 lipase units/g fat ingested per day.
  • Adults and children aged 4 and upEnzyme dosing for those over the age of 4 years should begin with 500 lipase units/kg of body weight per meal and progress to a maximum of 2,500 lipase units/kg of body weight per meal (or less than or equal to 10,000 lipase units/kg of body weight per day), or less than 4,000 lipase units/g fat ingested per day.

Half of the specified Pertzye dose for an individualized complete meal should be administered with each snack. The entire daily dose should consist of three meals and two or three snacks daily.

Because older patients weigh more but consume less fat per kilogram of body weight, enzyme doses expressed as lipase units/kg of body weight per meal should be reduced.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Pertzye (Lipase/Protease/Amylase)

How should Pertzye be stored?

Pertzye should be kept in its original container and stored at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C). To keep your medicine dry, close the bottle tightly after opening it (protect it from moisture).

The Pertzye bottle has a desiccant packet to help keep your medicine dry (protect it from moisture). Keep Pertzye and any medicines out of the reach of children.

How does Pertzye affect breastfeeding?

Pancrelipase has been utilized in breastfed infants whose mothers had an evident allergy to proteins in breast milk acquired from the maternal diet. This approach has reduced symptoms of egg allergy and cow’s milk allergy, including blood in the stool and colic. Pancreatic enzymes are not absorbed much from the mother’s gastrointestinal tract and should not reach the newborn. Experts believe that using pancrelipase while breastfeeding is safe.
