Myambutol, also known as ethambutol, is primarily indicated for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. It is an antibiotic that works by preventing the growth of the tuberculosis bacteria in the body. However, it should not be used as the sole antituberculous drug. Instead, it should be used in conjunction with at least one other antituberculous drug. The selection of the companion drug should be based on clinical experience, considerations of comparative safety, and appropriate in vitro susceptibility studies.

Do’s

  • The dosage of Myambutol is based on factors such as age, weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosage for you.
  • Myambutol should be taken by mouth with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. It is usually taken once daily, but in some cases, it may be taken twice weekly.
  • Take the medication exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. To ensure the best effect, take it at evenly spaced times and try to take it at the same time(s) every day.
  • If you also take antacids that contain aluminum, take Myambutol at least 4 hours before the antacid.
  • Continue taking Myambutol (along with other TB medications) until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear. Stopping the medication too early or skipping doses may result in a return of the infection and make it more difficult to treat (resistant).
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition lasts or gets worse.

Common Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea/vomiting

If any of these side effects persist or worsen, inform your healthcare provider promptly.

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects. Other side effects may occur. If you have any concerns about the side effects of Myambutol, consult with your healthcare provider.

Myambutol can cause serious vision problems, including vision loss that may be permanent. If you experience any problems with one or both of your eyes, such as changes in vision, stop using Myambutol and contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Myambutol may produce decreases in visual acuity, which appears to be due to optic neuritis. This effect may be related to the dose and duration of treatment. It is generally reversible when the administration of the drug is promptly discontinued, but irreversible blindness has been reported.

Liver toxicities, including fatalities, have been reported with the use of Myambutol. Baseline and periodic assessments of hepatic function should be performed.

Myambutol is not recommended for use in pediatric patients under thirteen years of age, as safe conditions for use have not been established.

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies you may have, as Myambutol may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Before using Myambutol, inform your healthcare provider about your medical history, especially if you have eye problems, liver disease, kidney disease, or if you consume alcohol.
