Macrobid is indicated for the treatment of acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (acute cystitis) caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

It is also used for the prophylaxis against acute or recurrent, uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections or pyelitis either spontaneous or following surgical procedures in adults, children, and infants over 12 years of age.

Do's
  • Take Macrobid by mouth with food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice daily (every 12 hours). Swallowing the medication whole is essential for optimal effectiveness.
  • Avoid using antacids containing magnesium trisilicate while using this medication, as they can interfere with the full absorption of nitrofurantoin into your system.
  • To maximize the efficacy of this antibiotic, administer it at consistent intervals throughout the day. Establishing a regular daily schedule for taking the medication can aid in adherence.
  • Complete the full prescribed course of this medication, even if symptoms improve after a few days. Prematurely discontinuing the medication may lead to a recurrence of the infection.
  • Follow your healthcare provider’s specific instructions and consult with them for personalized advice regarding the use of Macrobid.
