Duricef (cefadroxil) is indicated for the treatment of patients with infection caused by susceptible strains of the designated organisms in the following diseases:

  1. Urinary tract infections caused by E. coli; P. mirabilis, and Klebsiella species.
  2. Skin and skin structure infections caused by staphylococci and/or streptococci.
  3. Pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci).

Duricef belongs to a class of drugs known as cephalosporin antibiotics and works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Do’s

  • Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice a day.
  • The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In children, the dosage is also based on weight.
  • You may take this medication with food if stomach upset occurs.
  • If you are using the liquid form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon.
  • For optimal results, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) every day.
  • Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping it too soon may result in a return of the infection.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if your condition lasts or gets worse.

Don’ts

  • Do not use a household spoon when measuring the liquid form because you may not get the correct dose.

Duricef should be used with caution in individuals with markedly impaired renal function (creatinine clearance rate of less than 50 mL/min/1.73 M2). Close clinical observation and appropriate laboratory studies are recommended before and during therapy in patients with known or suspected renal impairment.

Prescribing Duricef in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit and may increase the risk of developing drug-resistant bacteria.

Prolonged use of Duricef may lead to the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. Careful observation of the patient is essential, and appropriate measures should be taken if superinfection occurs during therapy.

Duricef should be prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis.
