Xopenex HFA (Levalbuterol)

Do’s:

• Shake well before use.
• If it's your first time using the inhaler or it hasn't been used in 3 days, follow the instructions for test sprays in the air to ensure proper function.
• Inhale by mouth. Use Xopenex as directed by your healthcare provider, typically every 4-6 hours as needed. Inhale deeply through your mouth.
• If prescribed two puffs, wait at least 1 minute between inhalations.
• Using a spacer device with the inhaler may improve medication delivery. Ask your healthcare provider for guidance.
• Keep track of the number of inhalations used and discard the inhaler after using the labeled amount (including test sprays).
• Understand the difference between controller and quick-relief inhalers. Ask your healthcare provider about a plan for worsening symptoms or when to seek medical attention.

Don'ts:

• Don't spray your eyes. Avoid contact with your eyes.
• Don't use other inhalers without spacing. If using other inhalers, wait at least 1 minute between each medication.
• Don't test for remaining medication by floating the metal canister in water.
• Don't increase your dose or use it more often without consulting your healthcare provider. Overuse can lead to serious side effects.

Common Side Effects:

• Accidental injury
• Bronchitis
• Dizziness
• Pain
• Sore throat
• Runny nose
• Vomiting
• Palpitations
• Chest pain
• Fast heart rate
• Tremors
• Nervousness

Serious Side Effects:

• Wheezing, choking, or other breathing problems after using Xopenex HFA
• An increased need for medication, which could be an early sign of a serious asthma attack
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficult breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Sudden shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
• Low potassium levels in the blood
• Severe bronchospasm, with symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, tightness in the chest, and cough
• Severe allergic reactions
• Heart-related problems, such as very fast heart rate, severe palpitations, and changes in blood pressure
• Paradoxical bronchospasm (unexpected tightening of the airways)
• Rash, itching, and swelling, especially of the face and tongue

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Xopenex HFA, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to levalbuterol, similar medications (like albuterol), or any ingredients in Xopenex HFA. Disclose any pre-existing medical conditions to your healthcare provider before using Xopenex HFA, especially:

• Heart problems (irregular heartbeat, angina, previous heart attack)
• High blood pressure
• Kidney disease
• Seizures

Xopenex HFA may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you are sure you can do them safely. Limit alcohol and marijuana use while taking Xopenex HFA. Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including Xopenex HFA, before having surgery. Xopenex HFA should only be used during pregnancy when clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. It is unknown if Xopenex HFA passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
