Warning & Dosage

Directions on how to use Nexium

  • Follow the instructions listed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Take each dose of Nexium 40mg or 20mg with a full glass of water (eight ounces).
  • This drug should be taken at least one hour prior to eating.
  • Do not crack or bite a delayed-release tablet. However, in instances where swallowing the tablet would be a challenge, you may open it and sprinkle the medicine in a small amount of pudding or applesauce. Suck the pudding or applesauce right away without any chewing. Dispose of the mixture thoroughly.
  • Your nasogastric (NG) feeding tube tablet can be given through that tube. Read and follow any Instructions for Use provided with your use of this medication. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand what said instructions entail.
  • Follow the doctor’s instructions to use this medicine for the full length of time needed, even if your symptoms improve quickly.

Cautions

  • Nexium might cause kidney health issues.
  • Tell your physician if you urinate less than usual, or if you have blood in your urine.
  • A new infection may be the cause of diarrhea. Contact your healthcare provider if you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it.
  • You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to esomeprazole or to similar medications such as lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec, Zegerid), pantoprazole (Protonix), or rabeprazole (AcipHex).
  • You should not use this drug if you are suffering from breathing or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you’ve ever suffered from severe liver disease, lupus, osteoporosis, low bone mineral density (osteopenia); or low levels of magnesium in your blood.

Nexium vs Prilosec

Research suggests that Nexium is better at controlling acid than Prilosec; however, claims are divided between the two drugs. Nexium has the active ingredient Esomeprazole and is typically more expensive, while Prilosec has the active ingredient Omeprazole. It is not recommended to take Prilosec with the blood thinner Clopidogrel. Nexium has not been evaluated for interaction with clopidogrel, so it is not clear whether it has a similar effect.
