Maxitrol Eye Suspension (Dexamethasone/Neomycin/Polymyxin)

Do’s

The typical starting dose of Maxitrol Eye Suspension is 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 4 to 6 times daily. The dosage may vary depending on the severity of the eye inflammation and the specific instructions given by your healthcare provider.

Wash your hands thoroughly before using the eye drops to prevent contamination.

Tilt your head back slightly and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.

Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the pouch.

Close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes and apply gentle pressure with one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose) to prevent the medication from draining out.

If your dose is for more than 1 drop or if directed, repeat the steps for your other eye.

Replace the dropper cap after each use.

If you are using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes before applying them to allow the Maxitrol Eye Suspension to enter the eye first.

Use the medication regularly at the same times each day to get the most benefit from it. 

Continue using it for the full time prescribed, even if symptoms improve after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection.

Wait for your vision to clear before driving or operating machinery, as the eye drops may temporarily affect your vision.

Don’ts

Do not let the dropper tip touch your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.

Do not rinse the dropper after each use

Do not wear contact lenses while using Maxitrol Eye Suspension. If you wear contact lenses, consult your healthcare provider before using them again.

Eye irritation, burning, stinging, or itching 

Inflammation of the cornea

Allergic reactions, such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

Eye redness, watering, or a feeling of something in the eye

Blurred vision

Eye infection

These are not all the possible side effects of Maxitrol Eye Suspension. If you experience any unusual or severe symptoms while using this medication, consult your healthcare provider for further guidance.

If you are allergic to Maxitrol Eye Suspension or any of its ingredients, you should not use this medication.

Maxitrol Eye Suspension is contraindicated in most viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, as well as mycobacterial infection of the eye and fungal diseases of ocular structures. The presence of fungal and viral diseases should be excluded before using Maxitrol Eye Suspension.

Limited data is available regarding the use of Maxitrol Eye Suspension in children. However, there is no significant difference in the adverse event profile between children and adults. Nevertheless, follow the guidance of a healthcare provider when using this medication in children.

The safety of Maxitrol Eye Suspension during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Consult with a healthcare provider before using this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products. Some medications may interact with Maxitrol Eye Suspension; discuss potential interactions with your healthcare provider.

Regular ophthalmic exams may be recommended while using Maxitrol Eye Suspension, especially if you are using it for an extended period. This is to monitor for any potential side effects or changes in your eye health.
