Proloprim (Trimethoprim)

Do’s

• The dosage of Proloprim is typically determined by your healthcare provider based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and sometimes your weight (for children). Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
• Proloprim is usually taken once or twice daily with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider.
• If you are prescribed the liquid form of Proloprim, use a special measuring device or spoon to accurately measure the dose. 
• To ensure the best effect, take Proloprim at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day. Taking the medication at the same time(s) every day can help you remember to take it consistently.
• Continue taking Proloprim until you have finished the full prescribed amount, even if your symptoms improve after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection.
• If your condition persists or worsens after several days of treatment, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

• Do not modify the prescribed dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Do not use a household spoon when measuring the liquid form, as it may not provide the correct dose.

Common Side Effects:

• Pruritus (itching)
• Rash
• Mild gastrointestinal disturbances (including nausea, vomiting, and glossitis)

These side effects are generally mild and tend to resolve quickly when the medication is stopped.

As with any medication, there may be other side effects not mentioned here. If you experience any unusual or persistent side effects while taking Proloprim, seek medical attention.

If you are allergic to trimethoprim or any other ingredients in Proloprim, you should not take this medication.

Inform your healthcare provider about your medical history, especially if you have a certain type of anemia (due to folate deficiency), kidney disease, liver disease, vitamin deficiency (folate or folic acid), blood disorders (such as bone marrow suppression, G6PD deficiency), or mineral imbalances (such as high levels of potassium or low levels of sodium in the blood).

Let your healthcare provider know about all the medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, natural products, and vitamins. Some drugs may interact with Proloprim, potentially affecting its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Check with your healthcare provider before starting, stopping, or changing the dose of any medication.

Proloprim may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your exposure to sunlight and avoid tanning beds while taking this medication. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.

Proloprim should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before taking Proloprim if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. 

It is not known whether Proloprim passes into breast milk, consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding while taking this medication.
