Ceftin (cefuroxime) is a cephalosporin antibiotic effective against a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria, making it ineffective against viral infections like the common cold or flu. Using any antibiotic, including Ceftin, when not truly needed can contribute to antibiotic resistance, making it harder to treat future infections.
Do's
  • Take Ceftin exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice daily (every 12 hours). 
  • Consume Ceftin with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. 
  • Swallow the tablets whole, as they have a bitter taste. 
  • Use the liquid suspension form instead if swallowing is difficult. 
  • Take the medication evenly spaced times each day, ideally at the same time(s), to maximize its effectiveness. 
  • Continue taking Ceftin for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning. 
  • Shake the suspension well before each use to mix the medication evenly. 
  • Measure the dose carefully with a medication spoon/cup. 
  • Take Ceftin oral suspension with food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice daily (every 12 hours).   
  • Continue to take the medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection. 
Don'ts
  • Do not crush or chew Ceftin tablets, as they have a strong bitter taste. 
Ceftin (cefuroxime) is available in tablet and oral suspension forms. The dosage is based on the weight of the child and the severity of the infection.

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
Serious Side Effects:
  • Severe stomach/abdominal pain
  • Persistent nausea/vomiting
  • Yellowing eyes/skin (jaundice)
  • Dark urine
  • Unusual tiredness

  • Inform your healthcare provider about allergies to Ceftin, penicillins, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or any other ingredients in the medication. 
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you have kidney disease, intestinal disease (colitis), liver disease, or poor nutrition. 
  • This medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness.
  • Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you feel safe doing so.
  • Limit alcohol and marijuana consumption, as they can worsen these effects. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take (including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products) before any surgery. 
  • Discuss with your healthcare provider before getting any vaccinations while taking Ceftin. 
  • Be cautious of potential side effects if you are an older adult. 
  • Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider, as Ceftin should only be used during pregnancy when clearly needed and may pass into breast milk.
