Sensipar is indicated for the treatment of several conditions. It is used to treat:

  • Hypercalcemia: Sensipar is used to treat high levels of calcium in the blood in people with cancer of the parathyroid gland and in people with overactive parathyroid glands that cannot be treated surgically.
  • Hyperparathyroidism: It is also used to treat overactive functioning of the parathyroid glands in people who are on long-term dialysis for kidney disease.
  • Parathyroid Carcinoma: Sensipar is indicated for the treatment of hypercalcemia in adult patients with Parathyroid Carcinoma.

Sensipar decreases levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, and phosphorous in the body.

Do’s

  • The dosage of Sensipar is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and lab tests. Your healthcare provider may occasionally change your dose to ensure the best results.
  • Take Sensipar by mouth with food or shortly after a meal, as directed by your healthcare provider. The tablet must be swallowed whole.
  • Take this medication regularly at the same time(s) each day to get the most benefit from it.
  • Regular blood tests are essential to monitor the safety and efficacy of Sensipar therapy. Your healthcare provider may perform repeated blood tests to monitor calcium, phosphorus, and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels

Don’ts

  • Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
  • Do not split, chew, or crush the tablet.

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea and vomitin

Discuss any concerning symptoms with your healthcare provider.

Other Potential Side Effects:

  • Stomach or bowel bleeding, which should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately.
  • Low calcium levels in the blood, leading to symptoms such as numb or tingling skin, severe muscle spasms, seizures, unusual tiredness, or fast/irregular/pounding heartbeat. Report any of these symptoms to your healthcare provider.

Not all individuals may experience these side effects, and some may experience different or additional side effects. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized information and guidance regarding the potential side effects of Sensipar.

Before taking Sensipar or any other medication, consult a healthcare provider. They have the knowledge and training to decide which medicines are right for a specific patient.

Serum calcium levels should be measured within 1 week after initiation or dose adjustment of Sensipar. Discontinue etelcalcetide for at least 4 weeks prior to starting Sensipar and ensure corrected serum calcium is at or above the lower limit of normal before Sensipar initiation. During dose titration, serum calcium levels should be monitored frequently, and appropriate steps should be taken if levels decrease below the normal range.

Patients with moderate and severe hepatic impairment should have serum calcium, serum phosphorus, and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels monitored closely throughout treatment with Sensipar because cinacalcet exposure is increased in these patients. Additionally, overdosage of Sensipar may lead to hypocalcemia, and appropriate measures should be taken to correct serum calcium levels in the event of overdosage.

Sensipar treatment initiation is contraindicated if serum calcium is less than the lower limit of the normal range. Ensure corrected serum calcium is at or above the lower limit of normal prior to Sensipar initiation.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings and precautions associated with Sensipar. Always consult a healthcare provider for personalized information and guidance regarding the use of this medication.
