Peg 3350 (Polyethylene Glycol)

Do’s

• Take this medication by mouth once daily, or as directed by a healthcare provider or the instructions on the product package.
• Mix the powder as directed by your healthcare provider if prescribed in individual packets.
• Use the provided cap to measure the prescribed dose if using the bulk bottle.
• Mix the powder with a glass of liquid such as water, juice, soda, coffee, or tea, and consume immediately after stirring until completely dissolved.
• Allow 2 to 4 days after starting the medication to have a bowel movement.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition persists or worsens.
• Consult a healthcare provider to select a liquid thickener that will not interact with the medication if needed.
• Seek additional treatment advice from a healthcare provider if using nonprescription polyethylene glycol for self-treatment of occasional constipation and the treatment has not worked after 7 days.

Don’ts

• Do not save the mixture for later use.
• Do not add starch-based thickeners to the medication, as they may not work well and could increase the risk of choking. 
• Do not increase the dose or take the medication more frequently than prescribed.
• Do not use this medication for more than 2 weeks unless directed by a healthcare provider. Extended use or overuse of PEG 3350 may result in dependence on laxatives and chronic constipation. Overuse may cause diarrhea, dehydration, and mineral imbalance, such as low sodium.

Common Side Effects:

• Bloating, gas, upset stomach
• Dizziness

Less Common Side Effects:

• Rectal bleeding
• Blood in stools
• Severe and worsening stomach pain
• Diarrhea that doesn't stop
• Severe or persistent stomach/abdominal pain
• Burning, itching, or pain around the anus
• Difficulty with sleeping
• Feeling unusually cold
• General feeling of discomfort or illness
• Hunger
• Shivering
• Belching
• Indigestion
• Stomach discomfort or upset

Not all individuals may experience these side effects, and some may require medical attention. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, seek medical advice.

PEG 3350 should not be used if there is a bowel obstruction or intestinal blockage, as it could lead to dangerous or life-threatening side effects.

Do not use PEG 3350 more than once per day. If constipation persists after using this medication for 7 days in a row, consult a healthcare provider.

Before taking PEG 3350, inform your healthcare provider about any allergies to polyethylene glycol or any other medications.

It is not known whether PEG 3350 will harm an unborn baby. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while using this medication. Additionally, it is not known whether polyethylene glycol 3350 passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby.

Other drugs may interact with PEG 3350, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform all healthcare providers about the use of PEG 3350 and any other medications being taken
