Lumigan Eyedrops, also known as bimatoprost ophthalmic solution, is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is a synthetic prostamide analog that works by regulating the flow of fluid within the eye to maintain normal pressure. Lumigan Eyedrops can be used as first-line therapy or as adjunctive therapy to topical beta-blockers.

In addition to its use in glaucoma and ocular hypertension, Lumigan Eyedrops are also used to improve the fullness, length, and color of the eyelashes in people with a condition called hypotrichosis, which is a lack of eyelash growth.

Do’s

  • Before starting to use Lumigan Eyedrops and each time you get a refill, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Lumigan eyedrops should be used as directed by your healthcare provider. The usual recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once a day in the evening.
  • Before applying the eye drops, wash your hands thoroughly to ensure cleanliness.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Lumigan Eyedrops. Wait at least 15 minutes after each dose before putting your lenses back in.
  • Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the pouch.
  • Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose) and apply gentle pressure to prevent the medication from draining out.
  • Repeat these steps for the other eye if directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Replace the dropper cap after each use and keep it tightly closed.
  • If you are using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes before applying them after using Lumigan Eyedrops. This allows the Lumigan Eyedrops to enter the eye first.
  • Wait several minutes for your vision to clear before driving or operating machinery.
  • Use Lumigan Eyedrops regularly in order to get the most benefit from the medication. Use it at the same time each day as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Continue using Lumigan even if you feel well, as most people with glaucoma or high pressure in the eye do not have symptoms.

Don’ts

  • Do not use Lumigan more often than prescribed, as it may not work as effectively.
  • Do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
  • Do not blink or rub your eye after applying the medication.
  • Do not rinse the dropper after use.

Common Side Effects:

  • Discoloration of the eyes, eyelids, and eyelashes
  • Increased growth or thickness of eyelashes
  • Red, congested eyes
  • Itching or irritation of the eyes

Not everyone will experience these side effects, and there may be other less common or rare side effects associated with Lumigan Eyedrops. If you have any concerns or questions about the side effects of Lumigan, consult your healthcare provider for further information and guidance.

Lumigan may cause a gradual change in the color of your eyes, eyelids, and eyelashes. This change, usually an increase in brown pigment, occurs slowly and may not be noticeable for months or even years. Lumigan may also lead to increased growth or thickness of your eyelashes.

Inform your healthcare provider about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you are using, including vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other healthcare providers. Lumigan should be used only when prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Before starting treatment with Lumigan, patients should be informed about the possibility of prostamide analog periorbitopathy (PAP) and increased iris pigmentation. These changes have been observed during treatment with Lumigan and may be permanent, potentially leading to impaired field of vision and differences in appearance between the eyes when only one eye is treated.

Cystoid macular edema has been uncommonly reported following treatment with Lumigan Eyedrops. If you experience any changes in vision or other eye-related symptoms, consult your healthcare provider.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings and precautions associated with Lumigan Eyedrops. For a comprehensive understanding of the warnings and precautions, consult the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist or talk to your healthcare provider.
