Xalatan Preservative Free (Latanoprost)

Do’s

• Use Xalatan preservative-free exactly as prescribed by your doctor, regarding dosage and frequency.
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before applying the eye drops.
• Apply the drops:
  • Tilt your head back and look upwards.
  • Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a pouch.
  • Squeeze one drop into the pouch while looking down and close your eye gently for 1-2 minutes.
  • Apply gentle pressure near the corner of your eye (by the nose) to prevent drainage.
  • Repeat for the other eye if needed.
  • Wipe away any excess solution from your cheek with a clean tissue.
  • Don't rinse the dropper.
  • Close the cap securely after each use.
• If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applying Xalatan preservative-free and other medications.
• Store Xalatan preservative-free as directed by your doctor, typically at room temperature. Protect from light and don't freeze.

Don'ts

• Don't use the solution if it becomes discolored or cloudy. Discard and contact your doctor for a replacement.
• Don't touch the tip of the dropper to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
• Avoid touching your eye or eyelid with the tip of the dropper to prevent infection.
• Don't wear contact lenses while using Xalatan preservative-free unless your doctor approves.
• Don't use more medication or more often than prescribed by your doctor.
• Don't use a double dose. Try not to miss doses, but if you do, apply one drop as soon as you remember. 

Common Side Effects:

• Eye irritation or discomfort
• Redness of the eyes
• Itching or stinging sensation in the eyes
• Blurred vision
• Changes in eyelash growth
• Darkening of the iris (colored part of the eye)
• Increased pigmentation of the eyelashes

Serious Side Effects:

• Allergic reactions: Although rare, serious allergic reactions to Xalatan preservative-free can occur. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as rash, severe itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
• Eye infections: Contamination of the eye drops can lead to bacterial keratitis, a bacterial infection of the cornea. 
• Discoloration of soft contact lenses: Xalatan preservative-free may contain a preservative that can discolor soft contact lenses

Disclose any allergies to latanoprost or any ingredients in the solution.

Inform your doctor about:

• Glaucoma severity and past treatments
• Eye conditions like corneal problems (dry eye, injuries) or previous eye surgeries
• Underlying health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, or allergies

Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Wash hands thoroughly before instilling the drops. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or anything else to prevent contamination.

Be aware of potential side effects like eye redness, stinging, burning, or blurred vision. These are usually temporary but report any persistent or worsening symptoms to your doctor.
