Serc (betahistine) is a medication used to treat vertigo associated with Ménière's disease. Ménière's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that can cause episodes of dizziness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear.
It is also used to alleviate symptoms of vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and hearing loss associated with inner ear disorders. Serc works by improving blood flow in the inner ear, which helps to reduce the severity and frequency of these symptoms.
Do’s
- Take Serc exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. This typically involves taking it one to three times a day, with or without food.
- Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush or chew them.
- Take Serc regularly to get the most benefit from it.
- Tell your healthcare provider if your symptoms improve or worsen.
Don'ts
- Don't take more Serc than prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- Don't stop taking Serc without talking to your healthcare provider first.
- Don't sake Serc with grapefruit juice, as it can interact with the medication.
- Don't operate machinery or drive if Serc makes you feel dizzy.
Common side effects:
- Bloating
- Headache
- Heartburn or indigestion
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Itching
- Rash
- Stomach pain
- Skin irritations
- Dizziness
- Fast heartbeat
- Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:
- Signs of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of face or throat, hives, or difficulty breathing)
- Serious skin reactions
- Signs of a urinary tract infection
- Signs of kidney problems
- Signs of liver damage
- Signs of heart failure
- Unusual skin blisters
- Signs of pancreatitis

Don't take Serc if you're allergic to betahistine or any ingredients in the medication.
Serc is not recommended for people with active peptic ulcers or a history of peptic ulcers, as it may worsen symptoms
The safety of Serc during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not fully established. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before taking it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Serc can cause nausea, heartburn, and other stomach upset. Taking it with food may help reduce these side effects
While Serc itself isn't known to affect driving or operating machinery, Meniere's disease itself can cause dizziness. Use caution until you know how Serc and your condition affect you
