Travatan Eyedrops (travoprost with benzalkonium) is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Do’s

  • Before you start using Travatan Eyedrops and each time you get a refill, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Use this medication in the affected eye(s) as directed by your healthcare provider, typically once a day in the evening.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the eye drops.
  • If you wear contact lenses and your brand contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, remove your contact lenses before using this medication. This preservative can be absorbed by contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the eye drops before putting your lenses back in.
  • Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pouch. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the pouch. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose) and apply gentle pressure. This will prevent the medication from draining out. Try not to blink or rub your eye. Repeat these steps for your other eye if directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Replace the dropper cap after each use to maintain cleanliness and prevent contamination.
  • If you are using other eye medications such as drops or ointments, wait at least 5 minutes before applying them after using Travatan Eyedrops. This allows the eye drops to fully enter the eye before applying other medications. It is generally recommended to use eye drops before eye ointments.
  • After using the eye drops, wait several minutes for your vision to clear before driving or operating machinery.
  • To get the most benefit from Travatan Eyedrops, use it regularly and at the same time each day.
  • Even if you feel well, continue using Travatan Eyedrops as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Most people with glaucoma or high pressure in the eye do not experience noticeable symptoms.

Don’ts

  • Do not use Travatan Eyedrops more often than prescribed, as it may not work as effectively.
  • Do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination.
  • Do not rinse the dropper after each use.
  • Eye irritation, including redness, itching, or a feeling of something in the eye
  • Eye redness
  • Eye discomfort
  • Changes in eyelashes, such as increased length, thickness, or darkness
  • Darkening of the iris
  • Changes in eyelid skin, such as darkening or thickening

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects. If you have any concerns or experience any unusual symptoms while using Travatan Eyedrops, consult your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to Travatan Eyedrops. If you develop signs of an allergic reaction such as itching, redness, swelling, or difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention.

Travatan Eyedrops may gradually change the color of the iris (the colored part of the eye) over time. This change is more likely to occur in patients with mixed-colored irises (blue-brown, gray-brown, green-brown). The long-term effects of this color change are uncertain.

Avoid direct skin contact with Travatan Eyedrops, as the active ingredient (travoprost) can be absorbed through the skin. Pregnant women or those attempting to become pregnant should exercise caution to avoid direct exposure to the contents of the bottle.

The safety of Travatan Eyedrops during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Consult your healthcare provider before using Travatan Eyedrops if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Travatan Eyedrops may interact with other medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products, to avoid potential interactions.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings and precautions. Consult with your healthcare provider or read the product information leaflet for comprehensive information specific to your situation.
