Atarax (Hydroxyzine Hcl)

Do's

• Take Atarax by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually three or four times daily.
• If using the liquid form of this medication, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. In children, the dosage may also be based on weight.
• If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible.
• Atarax should be taken exactly as directed

Don'ts

• Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
• Do not increase the dose or take this medication more often than directed. If your condition does not improve or worsens, inform your healthcare provider.
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Common Side Effects:

• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Blurred vision
• Headache
• Confusion
• Tremor (uncontrolled shaking)

Serious Side Effects:

• Chest pain, discomfort, or tightness
• Cough
• Difficulty with swallowing
• Fainting
• Fast or irregular heartbeat
• Hives, itching, or skin rash
• Swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, or tongue
• Trouble breathing
• Seizures (convulsions)

Atarax should not be used if allergic to hydroxyzine or if pregnant.

The potentiating action of hydroxyzine must be considered when the drug is used in conjunction with central nervous system depressants such as narcotics, non-narcotic analgesics, and barbiturates.

Store Atarax at room temperature away from light and moisture. Liquid forms of the medication should not be frozen. Properly discard the product when it is expired or no longer needed, and keep all medications away from children and pets.

Before taking Atarax, inform your healthcare provider about any allergies to hydroxyzine, cetirizine, levocetirizine, or any other medications, and ask for a list of the ingredients in hydroxyzine preparations.

Atarax may decrease alertness, affect vision, or cause sleepiness and dizziness, so driving should be avoided if these symptoms occur.
