Atarax (hydroxyzine) is indicated for the following uses:

  • Treatment of Itching Caused by Allergies: Atarax is used to treat itching caused by allergies. It is an antihistamine that works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that the body produces during an allergic reaction.
  • Short-Term Treatment of Anxiety: It may also be used in the short term to treat anxiety or to help individuals feel sleepy or relaxed before and after surgery.
  • Adjunctive Therapy for Anesthesia: Used orally in general anesthesia or parenterally in functional or radiological investigations with pain, pre-anesthesia.

Do's

  • Take Atarax by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually three or four times daily.
  • If using the liquid form of this medication, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. In children, the dosage may also be based on weight.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible.
  • Atarax should be taken exactly as directed

Don'ts

  • Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
  • Do not increase the dose or take this medication more often than directed. If your condition does not improve or worsens, inform your healthcare provider.
