Kayexalate (Sodium polystyrene sulfonate)

Do's

• Take as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 1-4 times daily. 
• Use prescribed doses every 6 hours as needed, following the healthcare provider's instructions for preparation and administration. 
• Mix the prescribed powder with the prescribed water or syrup, stir well, and drink the entire dose. 
• Stay upright for at least 1 hour after taking the medication. 
• Use the suspension immediately after mixing. 
• Take other medications at least 3 hours apart from Kayexalate as Sodium polystyrene sulfonate may affect the absorption of other medications. 
• Seek detailed instructions on both oral and rectal use. 
• Seek clarification if you have any questions about the medication. 

• Don't store the mixed suspension for more than 24 hours. 
• Don't heat the medication. 

Common side effects of Kayexalate may include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Loss of appetite

Serious side effects of Kayexalate are rare

• Fever, chills, or vomiting
• Confusion or thinking problems
• Fast or irregular heartbeat
• Muscle weakness or spasms
• Swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet
• Signs of stomach bleeding, such as bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies before starting this medication, including potential reactions to inactive ingredients.

Discuss any existing stomach/intestinal issues (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, constipation) and low blood potassium levels with your healthcare provider. This medication is high in sodium.

Consult your healthcare provider before using potassium-containing salt substitutes.

If you have certain conditions like kidney problems, heart failure, high blood pressure, or swelling in hands/ankles/feet, discuss sodium restriction with your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you take before surgery or dental procedures.

Older adults may experience more severe constipation with this medication.

This medication is not suitable for oral use in newborns, especially premature babies.

Use with caution in newborns and children, particularly rectally, due to increased risk of constipation and intestinal problems.

Consult your healthcare provider before using this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
