Famciclovir treats shingles (herpes zoster), cold sores (herpes simplex), and genital herpes. 

Famciclovir is an antiviral drug. It can be used to suppress future outbreaks of genital herpes in individuals with frequent episodes.

Famciclovir manages, not cures, viral infections. The viruses remain in the body but famciclovir reduces the frequency and severity of outbreaks. It helps sores heal faster, reduces pain and itching, and shortens outbreaks.

Do's

  • Take Famvir as directed by your healthcare provider, typically 2-3 times daily, with or without food.

  • Inform your healthcare provider immediately if your condition doesn't improve or worsens. 

Don'ts

  • Do not stop taking Famvir early, change your dose, or skip doses unless instructed by your healthcare provider. 

Your dose depends on your medical condition and response to treatment. 

Common side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Mental/mood changes (such as agitation, slowed thinking, confusion, hallucinations)
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine)
  • Yellowing of eyes/skin
  • Easy bruising/bleeding

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

  • Confusion
  • Kidney problems (little or no urination, swelling in feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath)
  • Allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat)

Famciclovir may cause dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid activities requiring alertness like driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Limit alcohol and marijuana as they can worsen these side effects.

Consult your healthcare provider if you have lactose intolerance as Famvir may contain lactose.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including Famciclovir, before undergoing surgery or dental procedures.

Discuss upcoming vaccinations with your healthcare provider as Famciclovir may interact with specific vaccines.

Older adults may experience increased side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and kidney problems.

Famciclovir does not prevent herpes transmission. Use barrier methods (latex condoms/dental dams) consistently during sexual activity to minimize transmission risk.
