Ditropan XL (Oxybutynin XL)

Do’s

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, typically once a day. 

The dosage is determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment. The duration of treatment is established by your healthcare provider, who may recommend periodic trials off the drug to assess whether continued use is necessary.

Swallow the medication with the aid of liquids, ensuring that the tablets are ingested whole. 

Use this medication regularly in order to derive the maximum benefit from it. Remember to take it at the same time each day to establish a consistent routine.

Don’ts

Do not crush or chew the tablets, as doing so can lead to the rapid release of the entire dose, thereby increasing the risk of side effects.

Common Side Effects:

Dizziness

Drowsiness

Dry mouth

Severe Side Effects:

Severe stomach pain or constipation

Hallucinations, agitation, confusion, or somnolence

Blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights

Little or no urination

Painful or difficult urination

Dehydration - dizziness, confusion, feeling very thirsty, or reduced urination

Inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to Ditropan XL, its components, or any other drugs, foods, or substances. Any signs of allergy should be reported to your healthcare provider.

Ditropan XL may interact with other medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all of your drugs, including prescription, over-the-counter, natural products, and vitamins, to ensure the safety of co-administration. Specific caution should be exercised when using Ditropan XL with certain medications, such as ketoconazole, antimycotic agents, macrolide antibiotics, cold or allergy medicine, and medicine to treat overactive bladder, dementia, or Parkinson's disease.

A severe reaction called angioedema has been reported with the use of Ditropan XL, which can sometimes be life-threatening.

Anticholinergic medicines such as Ditropan XL may produce drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Patients should be advised to exercise caution in decisions to engage in potentially dangerous activities until the effects of Ditropan XL have been determined.

This medicine may reduce sweating, potentially causing the body to become too hot. Precautions should be taken during strenuous exercise or exposure to hot weather, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
