Cortate cream contains hydrocortisone, which belongs to a class of medications called corticosteroids.

It is used topically to provide temporary relief of minor skin irritations such as itching and rashes caused by various conditions, including eczema, dermatitis, insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and jewelry.

Cortate cream should be applied to the affected area in a thin film, following the instructions provided by your healthcare provider. The usual frequency of application is 2 to 3 times a day, but your healthcare provider may suggest a different frequency.

Cortate cream is available as a 0.5% cream.

Do’s

  • Apply Cortate cream exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, including dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment. This typically involves a thin film applied to the affected area 2-3 times a day, but your healthcare provider may advise differently.
  • Wash and thoroughly dry the affected skin area before applying Cortate cream.
  • Apply a small amount of cream to cover the affected area. Don't overuse it.
  • Gently rub the cream gently into your skin until it disappears.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water after applying Cortate cream, unless you are using it to treat your hands.

Don'ts

  • Don't use more Cortate cream than prescribed by your healthcare provider, or apply it more often.
  • Don't apply Cortate cream to open wounds or severely broken skin.
  • Don't bandage or tightly wrap the treated area unless specifically instructed by your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid getting Cortate cream in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Don't use Cortate cream for longer than prescribed by your healthcare provider. Long-term use of hydrocortisone cream can thin the skin and increase the risk of infection.
  • Don't Use on irritated skin from diapers: If using on diaper rash, avoid using tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants.

Common side effects:

  • Burning, dryness, irritation, itching, or redness of the skin
  • Increased redness or scaling of skin sores
  • Skin rash

Serious side effects (seek medical attention):

  • Appearance of blood vessels under the surface of the skin
  • Changes in skin color
  • Excess hair growth
  • Increased skin sensitivity
  • Lack of healing of the skin

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Cortate cream, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Corticosteroids can slow healing and worsen infections.

  • For longer than directed by your healthcare provider: Long-term use can increase the risk of side effects.
  • If you are allergic to corticosteroids or any ingredients in Cortate cream: Discontinuing use and consulting a healthcare provider is crucial if you experience an allergic reaction.

Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing medical conditions. Certain conditions may interact with corticosteroids or worsen with use. Here are some examples:

  • Diabetes: Corticosteroids can raise blood sugar levels.
  • Weakened immune system: Corticosteroids can further suppress the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections.
  • Circulation problems: Corticosteroids may worsen some circulation issues.
  • Eye problems (cataracts, glaucoma): Corticosteroids can increase the risk or progression of these eye conditions.

Corticosteroids can interact with other medications, so informing your healthcare provider is essential to avoid potential complications.

Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. Corticosteroids may pass into breast milk and potentially affect the baby.
