Asmanex is an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) prescription medicine used as maintenance treatment for the prevention and control of asthma symptoms in people 5 years of age and older.

Do’s

  • Inhale Asmanex Twisthaler (mometasone furoate inhalation powder) by mouth as directed, usually once or twice a day.
  • Discard the Twisthaler inhaler when every inhalation has been used or if it has been 45 or 60 days after removal from its foil overwrap pouch, whichever comes first.
  • Wait at least one minute between inhalations/puffs if two are prescribed.

  • Follow the instructions for priming the inhaler if using Asmanex HFA (mometasone furoate) inhalation aerosol for the first time or after not using it for more than 5 days.
  • Make sure to spray away from your face to avoid getting the medication into your eyes when priming the inhaler.
  • Shake the Asmanex HFA inhaler well before each use.
  • Inhale Asmanex HFA (mometasone furoate) inhalation aerosol by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice a day (morning and evening).
  • Clean the mouthpiece of the Asmanex HFA inhaler once a week with dry tissue.

Don’ts

  • Do not breathe out (exhale) into the inhaler (both Asmanex Twisthaler and Asmanex HFA).
  • Do not wet the inhaler (both Asmanex Twisthaler and Asmanex HFA).
  • Do not take the inhaler apart (both Asmanex Twisthaler and Asmanex HFA).
  • Do not swallow the rinse water after gargling and rinsing your mouth (both Asmanex Twisthaler and Asmanex HFA).

  • Blurred vision or other changes in vision
  • Headache
  • Nasal allergy symptoms

Asmanex is not a rescue medicine for asthma attacks. It should not be used to provide relief from a sudden asthma attack. Use a rescue inhaler for sudden asthma symptoms

Steroid medicine can affect growth in children. Inform your healthcare provider if your child is not growing at a normal rate while using Asmanex .

Hypersensitivity reactions, including rash, pruritus, angioedema, and anaphylactic reactions, have been reported with the use of Asmanex. Discontinue Asmanex if such reactions occur.

Asmanex is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to mometasone furoate or any of the ingredients in the inhaler. It is also contraindicated in the primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma where intensive measures are required.

Patients on immunosuppressant doses of corticosteroids should avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles and, if exposed, should consult their healthcare provider without delay. Inform patients of potential worsening of existing infections

Consult a healthcare provider before taking any drug, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment during pregnancy, nursing, or when administering Asmanex to children or the elderly.
