Asacol HD (Mesalamine)

Do’s

• Asacol HD should be taken by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 3 times daily. 
• Take this medication on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Swallow the tablet whole.
• Drinking plenty of fluids during treatment with this medication is recommended to help prevent kidney stones.
• The dosage of Asacol HD is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In children, the dosage is also based on weight. 
• Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.
•  If your condition does not improve or worsens, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

• Do not crush, chew, or break the tablets.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Signs of kidney problems such as changes in the amount of urine and blood in the urine
• Dark urine
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain

Serious Side Effects:

• Passing out
• Trouble breathing
• Ringing in the ears
• Confusion

Seek immediate medical attention if serious side effects occur.

Asacol HD is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to salicylates or aminosalicylates or to any of the ingredients of Asacol HD.

Renal impairment, including minimal change disease, acute and chronic interstitial nephritis, and, rarely, renal failure, has been reported in patients taking products such as Asacol HD that contain or are converted to mesalamine.

The use of Asacol HD may lead to spuriously elevated test results when measuring urinary normetanephrine by liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection.

Before taking Asacol HD, discuss your health history with your healthcare provider, as certain medical conditions or other factors may affect its suitability for you.

If you breastfeed while taking Asacol HD, be sure to inform your healthcare provider right away if your child has diarrhea.
