Amitiza, with the generic name lubiprostone, is indicated for the following conditions:

  • Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) in Adults: Amitiza is used to treat chronic constipation in adults.
  • Opioid-Induced Constipation (OIC) in Adult Patients With Chronic Non-Cancer Pain: It is indicated for the treatment of constipation caused by opioid (narcotic) pain medicine in adult patients with chronic non-cancer pain, including those with chronic pain related to prior cancer or its treatment who do not require frequent opioid dosage escalation.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C) in Women: Amitiza is indicated for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with constipation in women at least 18 years old.

Amitiza increases the secretion of fluid in the intestines to help make it easier to pass stools (bowel movements).

Do's

  • Take this medication by mouth with food and water as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice daily. 
  • Swallow the medication whole. 
  • Follow the specific dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider. 
  • Use this medication regularly to derive the maximum benefit from it. 
  • Remember to take it at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of medication in your system.

Don'ts

Common Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas and bloating
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Trouble breathing (generally goes away after a few hours)

Most of these side effects may go away within a few days or a couple of weeks. If they are more severe or do not go away, talk to your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects:

  • Dizziness
  • Full or bloated feeling or pressure in the stomach
  • Swelling of the abdominal or stomach area
  • Black, tarry stools
  • Blood in the stools
  • Chest discomfort or pain
  • Chills
  • Cold symptoms
  • Cough
  • Difficult or labored breathing
  • Fever
