What is Gonal F used for?

Gonal F is used to treat infertility in women by stimulating the ovaries to produce eggs. It is also used to treat male infertility by increasing sperm count.
It is used in Ovulation Induction (OI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF), to supplement a woman’s naturally occurring follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Gonal F is not effective if the patient is no longer developing eggs or producing sperm.
Before using Gonal F, tell your doctor if you have

  • Abnormal bleeding from the vagina or the uterus;
  • Uncontrolled adrenal gland or thyroid disease;
  • Ovarian cysts or enlargement, not due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS);
  • Hormone-sensitive tumors;
  • A pituitary tumor or other brain lesion or tumor;
  • Had an allergic reaction to Gonal F or its ingredients. (see allergy relief products here)

Gonal F Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Acne
  • Breast pain or growth
  • Discomfort at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Sinus infection
  • Stomach upset
  • Tiredness

Serious, but less common, side effects:

  • Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Calf pain or tenderness
  • Chest pain
  • Confusion
  • Fever
  • One-sided weakness
  • Severe or persistent shortness of breath
  • Severe pelvic or back pain
  • Signs of OHSS (e.g., decreased urination; diarrhea; severe or persistent stomach pain, upset or bloating; nausea; sudden unexplained weight gain; vomiting)
  • Slurred speech
  • Unusual vaginal itching, discharge, or odor
  • Vision changes
