Zetonna nasal aerosol (Ciclesonide) is a medication used to relieve seasonal and year-round allergy symptoms of the nose, such as stuffy/runny nose, itching, and sneezing.

It belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids, which work by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the nasal passages.

Do’s

  • Gently blow your nose before each use.
  • Prime the canister if it's your first time using it, if it hasn't been used in 10 days or more, or if the canister and actuator are separated (refer to instructions for priming).
  • Use the medication exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, typically once daily in each nostril.
  • Use the medication regularly and at the same time each day for best results.
  • Clean the outside of the nose piece with a clean, dry tissue regularly.
  • Monitor the dose indicator and discard the container when it reads zero.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve or worsens after 1-2 weeks of use.

Don'ts

  • Don't exceed the recommended dosage (1 spray per nostril daily).
  • Don't spray the medication in your eyes or directly onto the nasal septum.
  • Don't use the medication if the canister and actuator are not properly attached.

Common Side Effects:

  • Nasal dryness/irritation
  • Mild nosebleeds

Serious Side Effects:

  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights
  • Nasal ulcers
  • Hole in the cartilage in the nose (nasal septal perforation)
  • Slow wound healing

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Zetonna nasal aerosol, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Disclose any allergies to ciclesonide or any of the medication's inactive ingredients.

Inform your healthcare provider about:

  • Recent nose injuries, ulcers, or surgery
  • Current or past infections (tuberculosis, herpes eye infection)
  • Glaucoma or cataracts

Avoid people with contagious illnesses (chickenpox, COVID-19, measles, flu). Consult your healthcare provider if you've been exposed to an infection.

In rare cases, long-term use of ciclesonide may reduce your body's ability to respond to physical stress. Inform your healthcare provider about Zetonna use before surgery, emergency treatment, or serious illness/injury.

Long-term use may slightly slow growth in children. Schedule regular checkups with your healthcare provider to monitor their height.

Zetonna should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

It is unknown if Zetonna passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
