Rheumatrex (methotrexate) is indicated for the treatment of several conditions, including:

  1. Rheumatoid arthritis: Rheumatrex is used to treat moderate-to-severe active rheumatoid arthritis in adults who have had an inadequate response to one or more TNF-antagonist therapies.
  2. Psoriasis: It can be used to treat severe psoriasis that has not responded to other treatments.
  3. Certain types of cancer: Rheumatrex is indicated for the treatment of gestational choriocarcinoma, chorioadenoma destruens, and hydatidiform mole.

Do’s

  • Before starting Rheumatrex, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist.
  • The dosage of Rheumatrex and how often it should be taken depend on your medical condition and response to treatment. Different dosing schedules exist for various conditions, particularly for cancer treatment. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully.
  • Rheumatrex is taken orally (by mouth). Take the medication exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • For the treatment of psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis, Rheumatrex is usually taken once a week. However, the specific dosage and schedule may vary based on individual needs. It may take several months before the full benefit of the drug is realized.
  • If you are using the liquid form of Rheumatrex, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device or spoon provided with the medication.
  • Drink plenty of fluids while taking Rheumatrex, unless otherwise instructed by your healthcare provider. Adequate hydration helps the kidneys remove the drug from the body and may help reduce the risk of certain side effects.

Don’ts

  • Do not use a household spoon when measuring the liquid form, as it may not provide the correct dose.
  • Do not increase the dosage or use Rheumatrex more frequently or for a longer duration than prescribed by your healthcare provider. Doing so can increase the risk of side effects without improving the condition any faster.
  • Since Rheumatrex can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may pose a risk to an unborn baby, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling the medication or breathing in the dust from the tablets.
  • Bone marrow problems
  • Liver problems
  • Lung problems
  • Infections
  • Serious skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • Gastrointestinal upset, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Hair loss
  • Birth defects
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Bladder irritation

Not everyone will experience these side effects, and the severity and frequency of side effects can vary from person to person. If you have any concerns or experience any side effects while taking Rheumatrex, consult with your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Both men and women taking Rheumatrex should use effective birth control during treatment and for a certain period after the last dose. Consult with your healthcare provider to determine the appropriate duration of birth control.

Regular monitoring of liver function is important while taking Rheumatrex, as it can cause liver toxicity. Your healthcare provider may perform blood tests to assess liver function.

Although rare, Rheumatrex can cause lung problems such as methotrexate lung or methotrexate pneumonia. Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms like shortness of breath or chronic cough.

Rheumatrex can suppress the immune system, increasing the risk of infections. Promptly report any signs of infection to your healthcare provider.

Women of childbearing potential should be tested for pregnancy before starting Rheumatrex and should be fully counseled on the risks associated with the medication.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings and precautions. Consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and to discuss any specific concerns you may have.
