Renagel (Sevelamer)

Do’s

• Take Renagel exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically 3 times daily with meals.
• Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully if using the powder form. This includes proper mixing with water, beverages, or food within 30 minutes.
• Stir the mixture well and drink all of it.
• Take the medication regularly as prescribed, usually 3 times a day with meals.

Don'ts

• Don't adjust your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Don't crush, chew, or split the tablets (unless using the powder form).
• Don't heat the powder or add it to hot food or beverages (applies only to powder form).
• Do not crush, chew, or split them. Swallow the tablets whole.

Common side effects:

• Warmth or stinging sensation upon application
• Skin redness
• Dryness
• Itching
• Scaling
• Mild burning
• Changes in the color of the skin
• Problems with dialysis access site
• Severe constipation or inability to have a bowel movement
• Signs of stomach/intestinal bleeding or ulcers (such as black/bloody stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, stomach/abdominal pain, dizziness)

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

• Severe burning, stinging, or irritation of treated skin
• Severe redness, swelling, blistering, peeling, or crusting of the skin
• Signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing
• Serious inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract with complications including hemorrhage, perforation, ulceration, necrosis, colitis, and colonic/cecal mass associated with the presence of sevelamer crystals

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, especially to pramoxine or hydrocortisone.

Inform your healthcare provider of your medical history, particularly:

• Diabetes
• Eye problems
• Infections, especially rectal sores/infections
• Liver disease
• Stomach/intestinal problems

Long-term use of Proctofoam HC may weaken your body's response to stress. Inform your healthcare provider about Proctofoam HC use before surgery, emergency treatment, or a serious illness/injury.

Proctofoam HC may slow down growth in children if used for a long time. Regular healthcare provider visits to monitor height are recommended.

Proctofoam HC should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary and not for long periods or in large amounts. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. It is unknown if Proctofoam HC passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
