Mydriacyl (tropicamide ophthalmic solution) is indicated for the following purposes:

  • Dilation of the Pupil: Mydriacyl is used to dilate the pupil for an eye examination or other diagnostic procedures.
  • Cycloplegia: Mydriacyl can cause paralysis of the iris muscle in the eye, known as cycloplegia, for diagnostic purposes.

Do’s

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before using the medication.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Mydriacyl. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance on when you can replace your contact lenses.
  • Tilt your head back and look upward. Pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pouch. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place 1 or 2 drops into the pouch.  Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Then, place one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose) and apply gentle pressure for 2 to 3 minutes. This helps prevent the medication from draining out and being absorbed by your body. If directed, repeat the same steps for the other eye.
  • Replace the dropper cap securely after use to maintain its cleanliness.
  • If you are using other eye medications, such as drops or ointments, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before applying them. This allows the Mydriacyl drops to have enough time to enter the eye. It is generally recommended to use eye drops before eye ointments.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after using Mydriacyl. If you are administering this medication to a child, make sure to prevent the medication from getting into the child's mouth. Also, wash the child's hands after giving the medication.

Don’ts

  • Avoid touching the dropper tip or letting it come into contact with your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
  • Avoid blinking or rubbing your eyes after applying the medication.
  • Do not rinse the dropper after use.

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and other side effects may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and information regarding the potential side effects of Mydriacyl.

Mydriacyl may interact with other medications you are taking. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications and supplements you are using to avoid potential interactions.

Do not use Mydriacyl while wearing contact lenses. The medication may contain a preservative that can discolor soft contact lenses. It is recommended to wait until your eyes are no longer dilated before putting in your contact lenses.

The use of Mydriacyl during pregnancy is not recommended, as there have been no well-controlled studies conducted on pregnant women. It is also unknown if Mydriacyl passes into breast milk, so caution should be exercised when using this medication while breastfeeding. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance.

Tropicamide, the active ingredient in Mydriacyl, may cause drowsiness, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light. Patients should be cautious and avoid driving or engaging in other hazardous activities unless their vision is clear.

Tropicamide may be inadequate for cycloplegia (paralysis of the iris muscle) in children. In such cases, a more potent cycloplegic agent, such as atropine, may be required. Additionally, concentrations greater than 0.5% should not be used in small infants.
