Clenpiq (Sodium Picosulfate/Magnesium Oxide/Citric Acid)

Do's

• Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding any special diet, particularly the types and amount of liquids you can consume.
• Discuss with your healthcare provider the timing of other medications relative to Clenpiq.
• Take Clenpiq exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, including the dosage and timing of each dose.
• Follow specific instructions for mixing the powder or using the liquid form of Clenpiq as it comes in powder or liquid forms.
• Drink plenty of clear liquids before, during, and after taking Clenpiq to prevent dehydration.
• Space out clear liquids if you experience bloating or stomach pain.
• Expect watery bowel movements 2-4 hours after taking the medication. Ensure access to a toilet until the effects wear off.

Don'ts

• Do not take any other medications by mouth within 1 hour before starting Clenpiq.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea
• Headache
• Dehydration or dizziness
• Abdominal pain
• Hypermagnesemia (high magnesium levels in the blood, usually transient)
• Vomiting

Serious Side Effects:

• Severe dehydration (symptoms may include dizziness, headache, dry mouth, lightheadedness, vomiting)
• Kidney problems (symptoms may include difficulty urinating, swelling in arms and legs, tiredness, nausea)
• Abnormal heart rhythm (symptoms may include fast heartbeat, dizziness, tiredness, weakness, chest pain, sweating)
• Seizures
• Stomach and bowel problems (including blockages, ulcers, and holes in the wall of the gut)

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies you have.

Disclose your medical history, especially if you have:

• Heart problems (irregular heartbeat, heart attack)
• Kidney problems
• Electrolyte imbalances (low sodium)
• Seizures
• Stomach/intestinal issues (retention, blockage, ulcers, ulcerative colitis)
• Swallowing difficulties

Tell your healthcare provider and dentist about all medications you take, including prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products. Clenpiq should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding as it's unknown if Clenpiq passes into breast milk.
