Tegretol

Tegretol belongs to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants, which work by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures and pain. It is used to treat seizures and nerve pain, which include trigeminal neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy and it can also used to treat bipolar disorder.
Before using Tegretol, tell your doctor if you have a history of bone marrow suppression, or if you are allergic to any antidepressants. Do not take Tegretol if you have taken an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine phenelzine, or selegiline in the past 2 weeks. Patients, who have Asian roots or ancestry may have a higher risk of developing a rare but serious skin reaction to Tegretol.
Tegretol can have an effect on your reactions or thinking during treatment. Do not drink alcohol during while taking this medicine as it increases the risk of seizures. You must tell your doctor if you are using narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, cold or allergy medicine, other seizure medicines, or medicine for depression or anxiety. Avoid direct sunlight or artificial UV rays. You should use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you go outside.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you

  • are allergic to Tegretol or to any other drugs
  • are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • have liver or kidney disease
  • have porphyria
  • have heart disease or a heart blockage
  • have Lupus
  • have a history of mental illness
  • have glaucoma

Tegretol Side Effects

Serious side effects: Fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips; feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion; swelling of your ankles or feet; nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, jaundice; urinating less than usual.
Less serious side effects: Feeling dizzy, drowsy, or unsteady; mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain; confusion, headache, blurred vision; feeling agitated or depressed; ringing in your ears; dry mouth, swollen tongue; joint or muscle pain, leg cramps.
