Uceris is an extended-release corticosteroid tablet indicated for the treatment of active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis (UC) in adults to help induce remission.

Do’s

  • Take Uceris by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily in the morning. The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
  • Swallow the Uceris tablet whole with a full glass of water, unless your healthcare provider directs you otherwise.
  • Use Uceris regularly at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it gets worse.

Don’ts

  • Do not crush or chew the tablets, as this can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.
  • Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using Uceris unless your healthcare provider says you may do so safely. Grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects with this medicine
  • If you are regularly taking a different corticosteroid by mouth, such as prednisone, do not stop taking it unless directed by your healthcare provider. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. Your healthcare provider may slowly lower the dose of your old medication after you begin taking Uceris to help prevent withdrawal symptoms.
  • Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed.
  • Do not stop taking Uceris without consulting your healthcare provider, as some conditions may become worse when this drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache

Most of these side effects may go away within a few days to a couple of weeks. However, if they become more severe or don't go away, talk with your healthcare provider.

Serious side effects from Uceris aren't common, but they can occur. Call your healthcare provider right away if you experience serious side effects. In some cases, it may be necessary to seek emergency medical help if the symptoms feel life-threatening or if there's a concern about a medical emergency.

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects. Consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance regarding the use of Uceris.

Before taking Uceris or making any changes to your medication regimen, consult with a healthcare provider. This includes discussing any potential drug interactions, as well as seeking guidance on the appropriate use of the medication.

When taking Uceris, avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. If exposed to conditions such as chickenpox or measles, call your healthcare provider for preventive treatment, as these illnesses can be serious or even fatal in individuals using Uceris.

Uceris should be used cautiously in elderly patients due to the potential for decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, and of concomitant disease or other drug therapy. Patients with moderate to severe liver disease should be monitored for increased signs and/or symptoms of hypercorticism. Discontinuing the use of Uceris should be considered in these patients.

Patients should be advised that Uceris may cause systemic glucocorticosteroid effects of hypercorticism and adrenal suppression. Patients should taper slowly from systemic corticosteroids if transferring to Uceris extended-release tablets. Symptoms of steroid withdrawal may occur in patients transferring from systemic glucocorticosteroid therapy.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings and precautions associated with Uceris. For comprehensive information and personalized guidance, individuals should consult with their healthcare provider.
