Nasonex Nasal Spray (Mometasone Furoate)

Do’s

• Use Nasonex exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
• Gently blow your nose before each use.
• Shake the bottle well before each use.
• Prime the pump if it's the first time using it or if it hasn't been used in over 2 weeks.
• Tilt your head forward slightly and close one nostril while inserting the tip into the other.
• Breathe gently through your nose as you spray.
• Wipe the applicator tip and replace the cap after each use.

Don'ts

• Don't spray Nasonex in your eyes or mouth.
• Don't spray directly onto the middle wall of your nose (septum).
• Don't blow your nose for 15 minutes after using Nasonex.
• Don't increase your dose or use it more often than directed.
• Don't use Nasonex for longer than prescribed.
• Don't expect immediate relief; it may take up to 2 weeks for full effects.

Common side effects:

• Burning
• Stinging
• Irritation
• Redness
• Dryness
• Itching
• Inflammation
• Softening and breakdown of skin
• Blisters
• Serous drainage
• Crusting
• Mild nosebleeds (epistaxis) observed more frequently in patients with allergic rhinitis
• Localized infections of the nose and pharynx with Candida albicans
• Nasal septum perforation in some instances following long-term use
• Impaired wound healing

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

• Signs of allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Severe bleeding or increased drainage from the nose
• Nose pain or discomfort, headache
• White patches or sores in the nose that won't heal
• Wheezing, trouble breathing
• Vision problems
• Irritation or a choking feeling in the back of the throat
• Ear pain or full feeling, trouble hearing, drainage from the ear

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Nasonex nasal spray,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, including allergies to mometasone itself or other ingredients in the medication.

Inform your healthcare provider of your medical history, especially regarding eye problems, infections, and recent nose issues (injury, ulcers, surgery).

Avoid people with contagious illnesses (chickenpox, COVID-19, measles, flu). Consult your healthcare provider if you've been exposed to such infections.

Long-term use of mometasone might weaken your body's response to stress. Inform your healthcare provider about current or recent mometasone use before any surgery, emergency treatment, or serious illness/injury.

Mometasone should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

It's unknown if mometasone passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.

Long-term use in children might slightly slow their growth. Regular healthcare provider visits are recommended to monitor their height.

Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you use (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal) before having surgery.
