Kemadrin (Procyclidine) is used to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease or involuntary movements due to the side effects of certain psychiatric drugs, such as antipsychotics like chlorpromazine/haloperidol.

It belongs to a class of medication called anticholinergics that work by blocking a certain natural substance, acetylcholine. This helps decrease muscle stiffness, sweating, and the production of saliva and helps improve walking ability in people with Parkinson's disease

Do’s

  • Take Kemadrin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider , typically 3-4 times a day after meals and at bedtime.
  • Take it with food to minimize stomach upset.
  • Your healthcare provider will likely start you on a low dose and gradually increase it to find the most effective dose with minimal side effects.
  • If using the liquid form, measure the dose carefully with the provided measuring tool, not a household spoon.
  • Take Kemadrin consistently, at the same times each day, for maximum benefit.
  • Maintain at least a 1-hour gap between Kemadrin and antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium.
  • Allow at least 1-2 hours between Kemadrin and certain antidiarrheal medications (kaolin, pectin, attapulgite).
  • Take Kemadrin at least 2 hours after ketoconazole medication.
  • Follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully, especially if taking Kemadrin for side effects of other medications or for Parkinson's disease (dosage adjustments for other medications might be necessary).
  • Inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of substance abuse, as there's a potential risk of addiction to Kemadrin.

Don'ts

  • Don't take more or less Kemadrin than prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Don't skip or stop taking Kemadrin without consulting your healthcare provider, especially for long-term use.
  • Don't take Kemadrin for a longer duration than prescribed.
