Trilafon (Perphenazine)

Do’s

• Trilafon is typically taken by mouth with or without food as directed by a healthcare provider, usually 1 to 3 times a day. The dosage is based on the individual's medical condition and their response to treatment. 
• Initially, a low dose may be prescribed, with the possibility of gradually increasing the dose to lower the chance of side effects, such as muscle spasms. Follow your healthcare provider's directions carefully.
• Take the medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. It may take as much as 4 to 6 weeks of regular use to see the full benefit.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

Don’ts

• Do not stop taking this medication without consulting a healthcare provider, as the condition may worsen if the drug is suddenly stopped. The dose may need to be gradually decreased under medical supervision. 

Common Side Effects:

• Blurred vision
• Headache
• Sleep problems (insomnia)
• Strange dreams
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Increased sweating or urination
• Dry mouth
• Stuffy nose
• Breast swelling or discharge
• Mild itching
• Skin rash

High doses or long-term use of Trilafon can cause a serious movement disorder that may not be reversible. The longer Trilafon is used, the more likely it is to develop this disorder, especially in women or older adults.

Trilafon may interact with other drugs. Consult a healthcare provider before taking any drug, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment.

There may be a slightly increased risk of serious, possibly fatal side effects (such as heart failure, fast/irregular heartbeat, pneumonia) when Trilafon is used by older adults with dementia. This medication is not approved for the treatment of dementia-related behavior problems. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with a healthcare provider.

Trilafon can have severe side effects, including tardive dyskinesia, which may not go away after discontinuing the medication.
