Cyklokapron is used short-term in people with hemophilia to prevent and reduce bleeding from tooth extractions. It is also used in people with other high-risk bleeding conditions to control bleeding after surgery, injury, heavy nosebleeds, or heavy menstrual bleeding.
Tranexamic acid, the active ingredient in Cyklokapron, works by helping the blood clot normally to prevent and stop prolonged bleeding. It belongs to a class of drugs known as anti-fibrinolytics.
Do’s
- Take Cyklokapron exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. This includes the dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment.
- Take it at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of medication in your body.
- Inform your healthcare provider if your medical condition persists or worsens despite taking Cyklokapron.
Don'ts
- Don't adjust your dosage, take it more often, or take it for longer than prescribed.
- Don't skip or miss doses.
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:
- Allergic reactions, such as hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Problems with vision, including color vision changes
- Light-headed feeling or feeling like you might pass out
- Seizures
- Painful or difficult urination, blood in the urine
- Signs of a stroke, such as sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, severe headache, confusion, or trouble speaking
- Signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies you have before taking Cyklokapron.
Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider, especially if you have:
- Blood clots in the past
- Bleeding in the brain
- Color vision problems
- Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a serious blood clotting issue
- Kidney problems
- Irregular menstrual bleeding of unknown cause
Cyklokapron may cause dizziness. Avoid activities requiring alertness (driving, operating machinery) until you feel normal. Limit alcohol and marijuana use which can worsen dizziness.
Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take (including Cyklokapron) before any surgery.
Cyklokapron should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.
Cyklokapron passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
