Alomide (lodoxamide tromethamine ophthalmic solution) is indicated for the treatment of the following ocular disorders:

  • Vernal keratoconjunctivitis
  • Vernal conjunctivitis
  • Vernal keratitis

Do’s

  • Use this medication in the affected eye(s) as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 4 times daily. Treatment may be continued for as long as 3 months.
  • Wash your hands before applying the eye drops to avoid contamination.
  • Tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch.
  • Hold the dropper directly over the eye and place 1 drop into the pouch. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of the eye near the nose and apply gentle pressure to prevent the medication from draining away from the eye. Repeat these steps if your dose is for more than 1 drop and for the other eye if so directed.
  • Replace the dropper cap tightly after each use.
  • If using another kind of eye medication (such as drops or ointments), wait at least 5 minutes before applying other medications. Use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the eye drops to enter the eye.
  • Wait several minutes for your vision to clear before driving or operating machinery.
  • Use this medication regularly at the same times each day to get the most benefit from it.
  • Continue using it for the full time prescribed. It may take up to several days of continued use to see relief in symptoms.
  • If immediate relief of symptoms (itching) is needed, use other quick-relief medication along with Alomide as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if your condition lasts or gets worse.

Don’ts

  • Avoid touching the dropper tip or letting it touch your eye or any other surface.
  • Do not wear contact lenses while using this medication.
  • Try not to blink and do not rub the eye after applying the medication.
  • Do not rinse the dropper.

Common Side Effects:

  • Eye itching, watering, pain, or redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry or watery eyes, crusting, or drainage

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe burning or stinging when applying the eye drops
  • Severe eye discomfort
  • Ongoing burning or stinging
  • Appearance of blood inside the eye

Allergic Reaction:

Get emergency medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Not all side effects may occur, and some may go away as the body adjusts to the medication. However, if you experience any of the serious side effects mentioned above, stop using Alomide and seek medical attention promptly.

Alomide is for topical ophthalmic use only and should not be injected.

Patients may experience a transient burning or stinging upon instillation of Alomide. If these symptoms persist, contact a healthcare provider.
