Stalevo 125 Indications

Stalevo 125 is an oral prescription drug used to treat Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is used by patients who previously took carbidopa/levodopa and entacapone as individual products. It is used to replace carbidopa/levodopa, without entacapone, among patients experiencing end-of-dose “wearing-off.” It also helps relieve PD symptoms, such as shakiness, muscle stiffness, spasms, difficulty moving, and poor muscle control.

Stalevo 125 Dosage Forms

Stalevo 125 is available in 31.25 mg/125 mg/200 mg tablets. This is usually prescribed three to four times a day or as directed by the doctor.

Stalevo 125 Mechanism of Action

Its carbidopa component works by inhibiting the decarboxylation of peripheral levodopa, which leads to having more levodopa available for transport to the brain. It is also rapidly decarboxylated to dopamine which increases dopamine levels. Levodopa also acts as a metabolic precursor of dopamine, which also contributes to the increase of the monoamine neurotransmitter’s level.

Entacapone contributes to the action as it inhibits the catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT). When administered with carbidopa and levodopa, it stops the destruction of nerve cells caused by Parkinson’s disease.

How to Take Stalevo 125

Before taking Stalevo 125, it is important to read the patient information leaflet or the medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not take this or other drugs unless you fully understand the uses and directions. Check with your physician or pharmacist for further medical advice or additional information.

This anti-Parkinson tablet is only meant to be taken by mouth. It is best to take this oral drug with a meal to avoid nausea. Do not eat high-protein foods because they can decrease the absorption of levodopa. You should also avoid high-fat and high-calorie meals because they can delay the action of this medication. Swallow the oral tablet and drink water after. Do not split, chew, or crush the product because doing so can stain your dentures, mouth, and saliva.

Make a dosing schedule. If you are taking iron supplements or any product that contains iron, administer them separately as far as possible because iron can also decrease the absorption of Stalevo. Do not increase or decrease your Stalevo 125 dosage. You should not also take this oral medication more frequently than advised. Further, never discontinue abruptly because doing so may result in worsening of Parkinson’s symptoms.
