Nitoman, also known as tetrabenazine, is indicated for the treatment of hyperkinetic movement disorders. These disorders include:

  • Huntington's chorea
  • Hemiballismus
  • Senile Chorea

Do’s

  • Before starting treatment with Nitoman and each time you refill your prescription, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist.
  • Nitoman should be taken by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider
  • The usual starting dose of Nitoman is once a day in the morning. Your healthcare provider may gradually increase your dose to 2 or 3 times a day over several weeks.
  • The dosage of Nitoman is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking
  • Take Nitoman regularly at the same time(s) each day to get the most benefit from it.
  • If you stop taking Nitoman for several days and then start taking it again, you may need to slowly increase your dose until you reach the regular dose you had been taking. Follow your healthcare provider's directions on how to restart treatment.
  • Report any lack of improvement or worsening of symptoms to your healthcare provider.

Nitoman may cause or worsen depression. It is contraindicated in patients with a current episode or a history of clinical depression.

Nitoman should not be taken together with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). At least 14 days should elapse between the discontinuation of an MAOI and the initiation of treatment with Nitoman, as well as between the discontinuation of Nitoman and the initiation of treatment with an MAOI.

Nitoman may cause drowsiness and orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure upon standing). Caution is recommended when driving or operating machinery.
