Multiload Cu is a type of intrauterine device (IUD) that is indicated for contraception. It is a copper-releasing IUD that works by releasing small amounts of copper into the uterus, which prevents sperm from reaching the egg and fertilizing it.

Do’s

  • Before the insertion of Multiload Cu, your healthcare provider will examine your womb to determine its position, size, and condition. This may involve using a speculum to visualize the cervix and cleaning the cervix and vagina with an antiseptic lotion.
  • Your healthcare provider will use a thin plastic tube to insert Multiload Cu into your womb.
  • After the insertion of Multiload Cu, two threads will extend into the top of the vagina. These threads serve as a way for you to check if the device is still in place.
  • Regularly check for the presence of the threads. If you are unable to feel the threads or if you feel any unusual pain in your abdomen during your period, contact your healthcare provider.
  • Wash your hands carefully before and after examining the threads.
  • The duration for which Multiload Cu can be left in place varies depending on the specific type. Your healthcare provider will inform you when the device should be replaced.
  • Typically, Multiload Cu 250 is replaced after 3 years, while Multiload Cu 375 is replaced after 5 years. Discuss the need for replacement with your healthcare provider and keep track of the insertion and removal dates.
  • If you decide to become pregnant, you should consult with your healthcare provider to have Multiload Cu removed.

Common Side Effects:

  • Menstrual changes, such as heavier or longer periods, spotting between periods, or irregular bleeding
  • Cramping or discomfort in the lower abdomen
  • Backache
  • Vaginal discharge

Less Common Side Effects:

  • Expulsion of the device from the uterus
  • Infection
  • Perforation of the uterus during insertion
  • Allergic reactions to the device or materials used

Monitor any changes or symptoms you experience while using Multiload Cu and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

The above information is not exhaustive, and individual experiences may vary. Consult with a healthcare provider for comprehensive information and guidance regarding the side effects of Multiload Cu.

There have been occasional reports of the thread breaking when removing Multiload Cu. In rare cases, the plastic body of the device may also break, especially if it gets embedded in the wall of the womb. Breakage or embedding may require an operation (curettage) to remove the device or its pieces.

The expulsion rates for Multiload Cu and other intrauterine contraceptive devices can be relatively high, especially in early postpartum insertion. The incidence of expulsion may be related to the IUD-endometrial distance of the uterine fundus measured by ultrasound.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings and precautions. Consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and information.
