Fragmin Vial (Dalteparin Sodium)

Do’s

Before using Fragmin and with each refill, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your healthcare provider.

Use Fragmin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, including dosage, frequency, and injection technique.

Inject Fragmin under your skin, not into a muscle.

Clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol before each injection.

Change the injection site each time to minimize skin irritation.

Store and dispose properly. Learn how to store and discard Fragmin and used supplies safely, following your healthcare provider's instructions.

Take Fragmin regularly at the same time(s) each day for maximum benefit.

Don'ts

Don't skip or delay doses of Fragmin without consulting your healthcare provider.

Don't mix Fragmin with any other medication.

Don't rub the injection site after a shot to minimize bruising.

Don't  use it if it is discolored or cloudy: If the Fragmin solution contains particles or is discolored, don't use it.

Don't use Fragmin for longer than prescribed by your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects:

Unusual pain/swelling/discomfort

Unusual or prolonged bleeding

Unusual or easy bruising

Dark urine

Black stools

Severe headache

Confusion

Vision changes

Unusual dizziness

Fainting

Seizures

Weakness

Numbness

Serious Side Effects:

Serious signs of bleeding: If you experience any serious signs of bleeding, such as unusual pain/swelling/discomfort, unusual or prolonged bleeding, unusual or easy bruising, dark urine, black stools, severe headache, confusion, vision changes, unusual dizziness, fainting, seizures, weakness, or numbness, contact your healthcare provider right away

Allergic reaction: Although rare, a serious allergic reaction to Fragmin may occur. Seek medical help immediately if you notice symptoms such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Fragmin vial, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Disclose any allergies to dalteparin, heparins, pork products, or benzyl alcohol (an inactive ingredient) before using Fragmin.

Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially:

Serious bleeding

Artificial heart valves

Bleeding or blood disorders

Certain eye problems (hypertensive or diabetic retinopathy)

High blood pressure

Heart infection

Kidney disease

Liver disease

Stomach/intestinal problems (active or recent ulcers)

Stroke

Recent spinal procedures or punctures

Spine problems

Recent eye/brain/spinal cord surgery

Reduce alcohol consumption while using Fragmin to minimize the risk of stomach bleeding.

Before any surgery or dental procedure, tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including Fragmin.

Take precautions to avoid cuts, bruises, or injuries. Be cautious with sharp objects and avoid contact sports.

Older adults may experience greater side effects, especially bleeding, while using Fragmin.

Discuss the risks and benefits of Fragmin use with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant.

Fragmin passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding while using Fragmin.

Fragmin use increases the risk of bleeding near the spinal cord after certain procedures, potentially leading to paralysis. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before any spinal procedure. You may need to temporarily stop Fragmin before and after the procedure.

The risk of bleeding is higher with certain factors:

Deformed spine

Previous spinal procedures/surgery

Use of other blood-thinning medications

Certain medical conditions Immediately tell your healthcare provider if you experience symptoms like back pain, numbness/tingling/weakness in legs, or loss of bowel/bladder control.
