DDAVP MELT (Desmopressin)

Do’s

• Follow the healthcare provider's instructions: Take DDAVP Melt exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, including dosage, frequency, and how to place it in your mouth.
• Place on tongue: When it's time to take your dose, place the DDAVP Melt medication disc on your tongue.
• Let it dissolve: Allow the disc to dissolve completely on your tongue. It should dissolve quickly.
• Don't swallow whole: Don't swallow the disc whole. It's designed to dissolve on your tongue for absorption.
• Drink fluids (if needed): If your mouth feels dry while the disc dissolves, you can sip small amounts of water.

Don'ts

Don't eat or drink before placement: Avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 30 minutes before placing the DDAVP Melt on your tongue. This ensures proper absorption.

Don't touch the disc with wet hands: Don't handle the disc with wet hands, as moisture can affect its effectiveness.

Don't swallow food or drink right away: After placing the disc, wait at least 15 minutes before eating or drinking anything. This allows for optimal absorption.

Common side effects:

Headache

Nausea

Upset stomach

Flushing of the face

Dry mouth

Mild stomach pain

Rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal passages)

Epistaxis (nosebleeds)

Nostril pain

Mild abdominal cramps

Serious side effects (seek medical attention):

Low levels of sodium in the blood (hyponatremia), can cause symptoms such as headache, confusion, hallucinations, muscle cramps, severe weakness, vomiting, loss of coordination, restlessness, or unsteadiness

Allergic reactions, including rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Severe flushing (sudden warmth, redness, or tingling feeling)

Swelling and weight gain

Seizures

Weak or shallow breathing

Light-headedness or feeling like you might pass out

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking ddavp melt, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to desmopressin or any ingredients in DDAVP Melt.

Medical Conditions such as:

Diabetes insipidus: DDAVP Melt is not effective for all types of diabetes insipidus. Discuss the appropriate treatment with your healthcare provider.

Heart disease: Use with caution if you have heart disease, especially congestive heart failure.

Kidney disease: Use with caution if you have kidney disease, as it can affect how your body removes DDAVP Melt.

Electrolyte imbalance: Inform your healthcare provider about any electrolyte imbalances, especially low sodium (hyponatremia) levels. DDAVP Melt can worsen this condition.

Seizures: A history of seizures may increase the risk of seizures with DDAVP Melt use.

Drinking too much fluid while taking DDAVP Melt can lead to water intoxication, a serious condition with symptoms like headache, confusion, and seizures. Conversely, dehydration can worsen your condition and make DDAVP Melt less effective. Discuss appropriate fluid intake with your healthcare provider.

Use DDAVP Melt during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. DDAVP Melt may affect fetal development.

Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding while using DDAVP Melt. It is unknown if desmopressin passes into breast milk.
