Aygestin (norethindrone acetate tablets USP) is indicated for the following:
- Treatment of Secondary Amenorrhea: Aygestin is used for the treatment of secondary amenorrhea, which is the absence of menstrual periods in women who have previously had regular menstrual cycles.
- Treatment of Endometriosis: It is also indicated for the treatment of endometriosis, a condition in which tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus is found outside the uterus, causing pain and other symptoms.
- Treatment of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Aygestin is used for the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance in the absence of organic pathology, such as submucous fibroids or uterine cancer.
Do's
- Read the patient information leaflet provided by your pharmacist before starting Aygestin.
- Take Aygestin by mouth as prescribed by your doctor.
- Take the medication with food or after a meal to prevent stomach upset.
- Follow the prescribed dosing schedule carefully.
- Take this drug as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily for 5 to 10 days during the second half of the planned menstrual cycle for the treatment of stopped menstrual periods and abnormal bleeding from the uterus,
- Inform your healthcare provider if your condition lasts or worsens while taking Aygestin.
Don'ts
- Don't hesitate to ask your healthcare provider for clarification if you have any questions about Aygestin.
The dosage of Aygestin is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within 3 to 7 days after you stop taking the medication.
- Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting
- Headache
- Breast pain or swelling
- Stomach pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting
- Depressed mood, trouble sleeping
- Weight gain
- Vaginal itching or discharge
This is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and others may occur. If you experience any adverse effects, seek medical advice.
Healthcare providers are advised to discuss the patient information leaflet with patients for whom they prescribe Aygestin. Aygestin tablets are not indicated in children.
Store Aygestin at room temperature away from light and moisture. It should be kept away from children and pets. Properly discard the product when it is expired or no longer needed. It should not be flushed down the toilet or poured into a drain unless instructed to do so.
Aygestin is not indicated for use during pregnancy. Safety and efficacy pre-menarche has not been established. It may also inhibit lactation at high doses. In some cases, it should not be taken while nursing.
Aygestin may interact with certain medications and smoking combined with this medication increases the risk of strokes, blood clots, high blood pressure, and heart attacks.
Aygestin should not be used if the individual has undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, breast cancer, liver disease, or a liver tumor. It may not be suitable for individuals who have had a heart attack, a stroke, or a blood clot.
Consult a healthcare provider before taking Aygestin, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment.
