Ampyra (dalfampridine) is indicated for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults to help improve walking. It is the first and only brand of prescription medicine specifically indicated for this purpose. Ampyra works by increasing walking speed in individuals with MS.

Dalfampridine, the active ingredient in Ampyra, blocks tiny pores called potassium channels on the surface of nerve fibers. By blocking these channels, Ampyra may improve the conduction of nerve signals along the damaged nerve fibers that have lost their myelin coating.

Do’s

  • Take Ampyra exactly as prescribed by your doctor, typically twice a day, with or without food.
  • Swallow Ampyra tablets whole. Do not crush, chew, or break them, as this can release all the medication at once and increase side effects.
  • If you have difficulty swallowing the tablets whole, talk to your doctor.
  • Take Ampyra regularly at the same times each day for maximum benefit. Setting reminders or alarms can help you remember.
  • Inform your doctor if your condition worsens or persists despite taking Ampyra.

Don'ts

  • Don't take more Ampyra than prescribed by your doctor, or take it more often than twice a day.
  • Don't take more than 2 doses in a 24-hour period. There is a space of 12 hours recommended between doses.
  • Don't expect your condition to improve faster by taking more Ampyra. This can increase the risk of side effects, especially seizures.
  • Don't stop taking Ampyra without consulting your doctor.

Common side effects of Ampyra may include:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Nausea
  • Insomnia
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Back pain

Serious side effects of Ampyra are rare but may include:

  • Seizures: Stop taking Ampyra and call your doctor right away if you have a seizure. Your chance of having a seizure is higher if you take too much Ampyra or if your kidneys have a mild decrease in function.
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis): Seek immediate medical help if you experience shortness of breath or trouble breathing, swelling of your throat or tongue, or hives.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Ampyra,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Let your doctor know if you have allergies to Ampyra or any other ingredients in the medication.

Inform your doctor about any pre-existing conditions, especially kidney disease or a history of seizures.

Ampyra may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you know how Ampyra affects you. Limit alcohol and marijuana use, which can worsen dizziness. Discuss marijuana use with your doctor.

Disclose your Ampyra to your doctor or dentist before any surgery.

Ampyra should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if Ampyra passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
