Members shall maintain appropriate policies and procedures with respect to generic substitution of medications. Members shall ensure that patients are told if a generic substitution is available. Patients may choose the generic, but if the physician has indicated no substitution, then the physician must be contacted for approval prior to dispensing a generic. If refused by the physician, the pharmacy shall notify the patient that the brand name will be dispensed.
